Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage is one of the oldest forms of massage therapies that has been used world over for a long time. Its earliest forms can be seen in different civilisations like the traditional lomilomi which is an ancient Hawaiian massage. But the most likely origin of hot stone massage seems to be the Indian Ayurvedic massage treatment that was designed to anchor the root chakra and the second chakra and thus relieve bodily tension.

The therapy involves placing smooth and heated stones on the body that helps relax the body muscles and reduces the pain.

How Hot Stone Massage Works

The hot stone massage is a very special technique of massaging. It includes placing of heated stones usually volcanic stones like basalt that can absorb and retain heat better. The heat from the stones helps the release of strained and tight muscles of body.

The stones that are arranged on the body along the energy centres of body actually relax the muscles. If there is a need then a session of massage can follow the laying of stones. Because of the heat the massage is more effective as the heat penetrates the body and relaxes the muscles.

The Hot Stone Massage Process

The hot stone massage is a long process and the preparations begin well ahead of the actual visit by the client. The very first step involves heating the stones in water with temperature hovering between 120 to 150F. Before applying the stones the therapist applies massage oil on clients back and legs.

The stones are placed over different places on the body and as the stone cools, it is replaced by a hotter one. The whole process is repeated on other body parts including neck, head, face, arms, hands, etc.

To enhance the energy flow in the body the stones are sometimes put on places like palms, between the toes or on specific places on the spine. The Chakra points are essential places where the therapist puts stones when he feels the time is right.

In case of injuries to muscles or rashes or skin inflammation instead of hot the therapist uses cold stones.
